This is the new blog for the User eXperience Roundtable coordinated by the CT Library Consortium & currently cochaired by Shawn Fields & Sharon Clapp. We’ve had 2 meetings thusfar. The most recent one was held at Darien Public Library on Thursday, September 16th.

Presenters from 203 Communications gave an excellent overview of basic usability and accessibility issues that libraries should be aware of when they are building or redesigning their websites. Common problems they noted in library websites they’d observed were:

  • trying to put everything on the home page
  • too much text
  • hard to find links to the most basic things people want to do at library website – e.g., check their account online, place reserves/holds (request a book), search the catalog

We finished up the day with a tour of the Darien Public Library. We paid close attention to the ways in which the physical, digital, and organizational work together to create a very user-friendly library – in-person and online. Their cutting edge technologies exist to make it easy for the library’s members (note: not “patrons” or even “customers”; instead, their users are “members”) to get at the library’s collection and to use its services.
